Abstract

[Also in Division G1] An tension or compression in a bar or strip being rolled between two adjacent stands of a rolling mill is indicated by measuring the deflection of the roll stands using, on deformable parts of each stand, two resistance strain gauges which form two of the four sides of a balanced bridge circuit. An indicating device controlled by the bridge circuits indicates the roll stand deflections. The stands 5, through which a bar 7 is rolled, are provided between flanges 6 at their bases with transducers 12 1 -12 4 . Each transducer, Fig. 4 (not shown), includes a deformable cylindrical portion (21) in which are axially mounted two active strain gauges, and ciroumferentially mounted two passive gauges. The transducer is adjustable in length by means of a nut (19) mounted on a screw 15 attached to the rod (16), a locking nut (18) also being provided. The transducer is given an initial compressive load when in position. Fig. 7 (not shown, indicates how the gauges (22a), (22-), (27a) and (27a and 27b) of two transducers are connected in a circuit having an amplifier (29) and an indicating device (30).
