Abstract

1341059 Automatic control of rolling mills ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc 10 June 1971 [ 15 June 1970] 19998/71 Heading G3R A rolling mill gauge is controlled in response to an error between the actual or average strip input or output speed, and a value calculated, using constant volume of material through the mill, from measurements of the input gauge, the input and output actual or average speed, and a desired output gauge. In the embodiment shown, input gauge G, is measured by an X-ray or contact device 36, and fed through digitizer 40 to shift register 44 which is pulsed at intervals corresponding to predetermined input lengths e.g. 1 foot, as measured by roll 28, pulse generator 48 and interval counter 50. Register 44 acts as a time delay compensating for the distance between device 36 and the bite of the rolls. As shown, a computer 46, is fed by pulses proportional to the output length L 2 measured over the interval by roll 30, pulse generator 54 and interval counter 56; the desired output gauge G 2 d , set manually; and the input gauge G 1 , and calculates a value of input length L 1 which is compared with an actual value, measured over the same interval, from counter 58, to provide a gauge correction signal applied to the screw control 20 and /or the tension control 34. To compensate for errors in the computation, the actual output gauge G 2 may be measured by device 38 and compared with desired output gauge D 2 d to provide a further correction signal. In other embodiments Figs. 2-4, (not shown) the values of input speed, output speed or length are calculated and compared with their respective actual values to provide a gauge correction signal.
