Abstract
1407455 Measuring strain electrically USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 18 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 38723/72 Heading G1N In apparatus for measuring the roll separation force produced by a workpiece W in a rolling mill the signal from strain gauge bridge 8 installed on the roll housing is compensated for temperature drift by means of an amplifier 18 receiving the signal and supplying it to an integrator 30 through an inverting amplifier 26, a comparator 32 and switches 46, 48 being arranged such that when the signal to amplifier 18 is due to drift alone, that is no workpiece is present, the output signal from the amplifier 18 is inverted at 26 then integrated and fed to an input of amplifier 18 to balance the drift signal, but when a workpiece enters the rolls the integrator is caused to be switched to hold its output constant and equal and opposite to the drift component so that it is substracted at 18, and the meter 22 and recorder 24 indicate the driftfree force value. A variable resistor 28 is said to be arranged to control the speed of drift compensation.
