Abstract
1,069,035. Magnetic structures. STANDARD TELEPHONE & CABLES Ltd. April 15, 1966 [April 22, 1965], No. 17043/65. Heading H1H. A ferrite having at least 3 stable states o<SP>f</SP> magnetization is produced by inducing in a bi-stable ferrite a magnetic condition intermediate between the two fully switched conditions, and subjecting it to a heat treatment to introduce a stable state corresponding to the intermediate condition. The initial ferrite, preferably CO x Fe<SP>2+</SP> 1-x Fe 2 O 4 , where x is 0À025- 0À2, may be prepared by milling the constituents, pre-firing, re-milling, pressing into toroids, firing in CO 2 at 1350‹ C., annealing at 200‹ C. in an alternating field of frequency 50 c./sec., and magnitude first 100 oe. then 25 oe., and cooling in the field. The toroid is then pulsed (starting at remenance) until partial switching occurs, and in this state is heated at 70-250‹ C. The toroid may have a zone of reduced thickness (see Fig. 4). The stable states correspond to horizontal peaks in the hysteresis curve (see Figs. 5 and 6b).
