Abstract
The novel compound 3,5,8,10-tetraoxoperhydrodipyrrolo [a, d] pyrazine, hereinafter referred to as "pyroglutamic anhydride," and of formula <FORM:1068814/C2/1> may be prepared by dehydration and condensation of two molecules of pyroglutamic acid or dealcoholization of an ester thereof, using as condensing agent a carboxylic anhydride (usually acetic anhydride) or an alcohol, and a reaction temperature of 50-250 DEG C. Both D- and L-forms, also an optically inactive form may be prepared, and the optical activity of any one reaction product depends on that of the starting acid or ester, and the reaction temperature; above about 190 DEG C. only the racemic mixture is obtained. The product is obtained by crystallization and has a m.p. of 320 DEG C. with decomposition. It exhibits anti-microbial activity.
