In apparatus wherein sheets, which are registered on a feed table 35 by front stops 13 assisted by upper limit stops 12, are fed by oscillating grippers 18 to a printing machine, a scanning means of known type can detect whether the front edge of each sheet is accurately registered, or two sheets are superposed, and will stop the sheet or sheets being fed from the table by preventing the grippers from closing on a sheet and ensuring that the stops 12, 13 remain in blocking position. In normal operation, the electric mains is connected with a magnet 1 which pulls a control lever 5 to the left, by means of a toggle 2 and rod 3, against the action of a spring 4, and thus rocks a locking shaft 6 to which is secured an arcuate cam 7. Locking levers 8 and 9 loosely mounted on the shaft 6 have a spring connection with the control lever 5, and are also moved to the left. The levers 8, 9, and the cam 7, are thus disconnected, respectively, from pawl levers 15, 16, 17, belonging to the drive of the stops 12, 13, and the oscillating grippers 18. If the scanning means stops the current to the magnet 1, the control lever 5 swings back to the full line position, and the pawl levers 15, 16, 17 are then operative to retain the stops 12, 13 in the raised sheet blocking position, and to hold the grip. pers 18 open, so that a sheet cannot be fed from the table 35.
