A sheet 1 passing over a feed table 3 is first retarded and then aligned by front stops 4 which move in the direction of sheet feed by rotation of a shaft 17 by means of a cam 22 through a spring rod 28, which permits extra movement of the cam follower 21, and against an adjustable stop 30 which defines the aligned position of the sheet. The sheet is then released by the stops 4 moving downwards under the control of a cam 31 which acts through a spring rod 33, permitting extra movement of the cam follower 38, to rotate a shaft 16 on which is mounted an arm 13 rotatably supporting the shaft 17. The stops 4, by a combination of the two drives, follow a closed path 44. The upper position of the stops 4 is defined by an adjustable stop 42. Arms 6 pinned to a shaft 5 overlie the stops 4 to prevent over-shooting of the sheet. In the event of a sheet resting obliquely against the stops 4 or of double feed, a magnet 52 is energized to move a pawl 55 into the path of a projection 56 on the lever 20 carrying the roller 21 to prevent lowering of the latter and therefore of the roller 38, whereby the stops 4 do not move to release position. The lever 37, 40 which transmits movement from the cam 31 to the shaft 16 is mounted separately from the shaft 16. A spindle 47 can be used to rotate an eccentric bush 48 carrying the shaft 16 to vary the position of an aligned sheet. The mechanism is duplicated at each side of the feed table, so that rotation of one spindle 47 can vary the direction of alignment of the leading edge of the sheet.
