  • This invention relates to duplicating machines of the type employing a drum having afduplicating pad thereon formed of gelatin or similar material adapted to carry a copy ink design on its face formed in reverse so as to transfer a copy in positive form toa copy sheet or sheet assembly pressed against the pad as the drum rotates. It is the principal object of the invention to provide a new and improved form and arran-gement of parts for feeding a copy sheet assembly into preliminary position so as to insure that the assembly shall be presented to the drum evenly and shall be gripped by the pad and its cooperating pressure roller in the desired operative relation to the pad.

This invention relates to duplicating machines of the type employing a drum having afduplicating pad thereon formed of gelatin or similar material adapted to carry a copy ink design on its face formed in reverse so as to transfer a copy in positive form toa copy sheet or sheet assembly pressed against the pad as the drum rotates. It is the principal object of the invention to provide a new and improved form and arran-gement of parts for feeding a copy sheet assembly into preliminary position so as to insure that the assembly shall be presented to the drum evenly and shall be gripped by the pad and its cooperating pressure roller in the desired operative relation to the pad.
This invention is designed particularly for use with a duplicating machine employed for system Work, in which the copy sheet assemblies in many cases comprise a considerable number of sheets in overlapping arrangement with respect to each other, with the assembly arranged so as to have a greater thickness at its intermediate portion than at either side portion. With the machine operating on copy sheet assemblies of consider-A able weight and uneven thickness, it is highly important that the mechanism for handling the assemblies and controlling theirposition for the duplication operation shall be very eiective so as to reduce to a minimum the likelihood that the assemblies shall slip Yor fail to respond to thel normal impulses characterizing their movement' through the machine. The invention may be considered as an improvement on the machine covered by the prior patent to Marchev, No. 2,150,744, granted March 14, 1939.
This invention comprises a great many parts formed and arranged in accordance with the showing of said prior patent. Improved means is provided however for holding the copy sheet or copy sheet assembly in position on the obliquely disposed paper guide after the front margin bar t has been withdrawn for avoiding contact with the rotating drum, such retention of the copy sheet in position being eiected by means of a pressure roller which is automatically moved into pressure relationship to the copy sheet in timed relation to the rotary movement of the drum and which is thereafter automatically withdrawn for permitting the insertion of the next succeeding copy sheet or assembly.
In the arrangement shown, improved means is provided also for controlling the movement of the copy sheet or assembly to the margin bar, comprising a rotatably mounted paper stop plate which is automatically moved into position for stopping the downward movement of a sheet toward the margin bar and is then automatically moved out of operative stopping position at the desired interval for permitting the paper to resume its downward Vmovement. VThe arrangement is such, `in the machine illustrated, that the copy sheet or assembly first engages the paper stop plate by which it is held up `for a short period, after which the sheet or assembly moves downwardly into engagement with the margin bar which stops the sheet or assembly in the position at which the sheetfis adapted to be gripped by the segmental drum and its cooperating .platen roller. After the copy sheet or assembly is stopped by the margin bar and before the margin bar has been withdrawn, the pressure roller is brought into operation for holding the sheet or assembly yieldingly against downward movement, serving to hold the sheet or assembly stationary until it is gripped by the drum and platen roller.
An improved arrangement of margin. bar means is provided by the use of which .the margin bar can be adjusted angularly so as to bring the vbar accurately into parallelism with the line at which the platen roller andthe drum are brought into engagement for insuring that the copy sheet or assembly shall be gripped in the desired angular relationship to the ink design on the pad.
VThis invention comprises further an improved arrangement of side margin devices at opposite sides'of the obliquely positioned paper guide, between which margin devices the copy sheets or assemblies are placed one at a time for delivery to the segmental drum. These side margin de- Vices are provided with means for effecting lateral adjustment of the parts whereby they may be set for sheets or assemblies of varying width and whereby the position at which the sheets are fed may be adjusted transversely of the machine as may be desired. The. arrangement shown comprises easily controlled and lmanipulated means for effecting the desired transverse adjustment of the parts.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, in which corresponding parts are indicated by thersame reference characters, 25 indicates frame members at opposite sides of the machine, only one of which is shown in the drawings, being arranged for supporting a drum 26 by means of a heavy shaft 21, as is best shown in Fig. 5. The drum is of segmental form, having an opening 28 at one side as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The segmental drum 26 is provided with reels 29 of any suitable form for supporting a gelatin band 3U upon the outer face of the drum, as is usual in machines of this type. Any suitable means not shown is provided for rotating the drum in counterclockwise direction in Figs. 2 and 3.
At opposite sides of the machine, secondary frame members 3| are provided spaced inwardly from the frame members 25 and mounted so as to be held rigidly in Xed positionby any suitable type of mounting means. Between said frame members 3|, a platen roller 32 is rotatably mounted by any suitable means not shown and preferably of the type shown in the prior Marchev Patent No. 2,150,744, by which the platen roller` is pressed yieldingly toward the drum so 'as to have operative pressure relationship with the gelatin band 38 thereon. Between the frame members 3|, a table or tray 33 is secured so as to be adapted to support a pile of copy sheets or copy sheet assemblies in convenient position for being fed by hand to the sheet guiding and supporting means of the machine for being carried one lat a time into impression relationship to the gelatin band.
Adjacent to the rear edge portion of the table or tray 33 (at the right edge thereof as' shown vin Fig. 2), a shaft 34 is rotatabli7 mounted between the frame members 3|. Upon this shaft, two bellcrank levers or brackets 35 are loosely mounted for supporting a paper guide structure in oblique position as hereinafter described, each of the brackets 35 being provided with a roller 36 rotatably mounted thereon in position to engage horizontally extending portions of the framework as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for limiting the clockwise movement of the brackets in said gures.
Upon the upwardly extending rear end portions of the brackets 35, end frame members 31 are xedly mounted, as is best shown in Fig. 3, such end frame members being disposed in oblique position, as is clearly shown in Figs. l and 2. Upon the front faces of the end frame members 31, a plurality of cross strips 38 are mounted for supporting a copy sheet assembly in position, such strips being mounted in spaced relation to each other, as is best shown in Fig. '1. Directly behind the plate member made up of the strips 38, two rods 39 and 48 are positioned, supported at their ends by the end frame members 31.
The uppermost strip 38 is provided at its upper edge with a backwardly extending flange 4| which extends into a channel 42 on the bottom edge of a plate 43' for supporting the plate 43 rigidly in position, such plate 43 being provided at its ends with upwardly extending arms 44 and 45 formed integrally therewith in the form of channels for supporting a transparent sheet 46 in position, as is best shown in Fig. 8.
Upon the rearfaces of the end frame members 31 at an intermediate point thereon, blocks 41 are xedly mounted in position for supporting a cross rod 48, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. Upon the rods 39, 48 and 48 slide bars 49 and 58 are adjustably mounted, the engagement of the slide bars with the rod 43 being effected by means of blocks 5|, as is best shown in Figs. 3 'and 8. The slide bars 49 and 50 are held releasably in position with respect to the paper guide by means of levers 52 pivotally mounted upon the blocks 5| by means of pins 53, as shown in Fig. 9, and arranged in such position as to have effective frictional engagement with the rod 48 for holding the slide bars releasably in position transversely with respect to the paper guide. The levers 52 are normally pressed in clockwise direction in said Fig. 9 for having holding engagement with the rod 48 by means of coiled springs 54. As will be readily understood, an operator can readily eiect an adjustment of the slide bars 49 and 50 transversely of the paper guide by first pressing the levers 52 toward the blocks 5| against the action of the springs 54 and then moving the slide bars into the desired position upon the rods 39, 40 and 48. When the levers 52 `are released, they serve to hold the slide bars in adjusted position.
Upon their front faces, the slide bars 49 and 5|!I are provided with pins 55 which extend forwardly through the spaces between the strips 38 making up the body portion of the paper guide, as is clearly shown in Fig. 8. In this position, the pins 55 serve as side margin means for controlling the transverse position of a copy sheet assembly 56 upon the paper guide, as will be readily understood (see Fig. l).
As is best shown in Fig. 2, the paper guide comprising the end frame members 31 and the parts supported thereby normally stands in such position obliquely as to direct a copy sheet assembly 56 downwardly thereon directly past the rear face of the platen roller 32 into engagement with a margin bar 51 in the form of a channel supported by arms 58 fixedly mounted upon a shaft 59 journalled between the frame members 3| of the machine. The arms 58 extend forwardly beyond the shaft 59 into position to engage a transversely extending bar 6B xedly mounted in position bctween said frame members 3|, said arms 58 being provided with cushions 6| in the form of rubber blocks lfor engagement with the bar 60, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. Coiled springs 62 are mounted on the shaft 59 at opposite sides of the machine having their outer ends engaging pins 63 projecting inwardly from the frame members 3| and having their inner ends connected with the shaft by means of clips 64. The arrangement is such as to cause the springs to give the shaft 59 rotary motion in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 2 for holding the margin bar 51 yieldingly in raised position directly below the platen roller 32, as shown in Fig. 2. On its outer end, the shaft 59 is provided with an arm 65 having a roller 66 rotatably mounted thereon in position to engage a cam 61 carried around with the drum 26. The arrangement is such that when the cam 61 is brought into engagement with the roller $6 as shown in Fig. 2, upon continued rotation of the drum in counterclockwise direction in said Fig. 2 the margin bar 51 is quickly moved out of operative paper-stopping position with respect to the copy sheet assembly 56. such that the margin bar 51 is thus moved outwardly with respect to the drum so as to be kept out of the path of the drum and the gelatin band 3i) as they are carried around in counterclockwise direction in Figs. 1 and 2.
The means for mounting the channel-shaped margin bar 51 upon the arms 58 comprises inwardly projecting lugs 68 on the inner ends of the arms 58, as is best shown in Figs. 1l and 13. At one end, the margin bar 51 is provided with a mounting lug 69 which is fiXedly connected directly with the lug 68 of the adjacent arm 58. At its opposite end, the margin bar member 51 is provided with a lug 19 which has adjustable connection with the lug 68 of the adjacent arm 58, as is clearly shown in Figs. 12, 13 and 14. This adjustable connection is effected by means of an eccentric 1| by which the lug 10 is movable forwardly and backwardly for carrying the margin bar into changed angular position with respect to the shaft 59. The eccentric 1| is locked `releasably against movement out of adjusted position by means of a toothed disk 12 which is rigidly connected with the eccentric, the disk being held releasably against rotary movement by means of a spring latch 13 mounted upon the end of the arm 58. By means of an adjustment of the accurately into parallelism with the line of pressure engagement between the gelatin band 30 on the drum and the platen roller 32. The margin bar 51 is accordingly adjustable into position for insuring that the copy sheet assembly shall have the desired position with respect to the copy carried by the gelatin band.
For controlling the movement of the copy sheet assembly 56 into engagement with the margin bar 51 in the position as shown in Fig. 2, guide plates 14 and 15 are provided mounted rigidly in downwardly convergent position with respect to each other so as to direct the copy sheet assembly into close proximity to the rear face of the platen roller 32, as shown in Fig. 2.
For enabling the operator of the machine to `place a copy sheet in proper adjusted position upon the strips 38 of the paper guide, a paper stop plate 16 is provided so as to be movable either into position across the path of a copy sheet as shown in Fig. 1 or into position out of the way as shown in Fig. 2. In the arrangement shown, the plate 16 is pivotally mounted upon the lower edge of the lowermost strip 38, as is best shown in Fig. l, the plate being mounted on center so as to -be 4in overbalanced condition 'for normally holding The arrangement is eccentric 1|, the margin bar can be adjusted ,Y

Means is provided for moving the plate 16 from its paper-stopping position as shown in Fig. 1 to the position as shownA in Fig. 2 for permitting the copy Sheet to' move downwardly toward the platen roller 32. This means comprises a rock shaft 11 rotatably mounted between the frame members 3| having an arm 18 Vthereon provided with a roller 19 in position to engage the forward portion of the plate 16 for moving the plate in counterclockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2, such movement being effected by a swinging movement of the arm 18 in clockwise direction in said gures. The movement of the plate 16 to its Fig. 2l position is effected in timed relation to the rotation of the drum by means of an arm provided at its lower end with a roller 8| in position to engage a cam 82 ixedly mounted upon the drum 26 so as to rotate therewith, the arrangement being such that the plate 16 is moved quickly out of its operative supporting position.
` Means is provided for holding the paper stop plate 16 yieldingly in its turned position, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to permit a copy sheet to pass downwardly along the paper guide toward the platen roller 32 and the margin bar 51. This means comprises an arm 83 pivotally mountedV vcarried by the plate 16 so as to apply pressurev on the plate. The arm 83 is pressed yieldingly in clockwise direction in Figs. 1 and 2 by meansA of a coiled spring 85, as is best shown in Figs. 6 and '7.
At its lower end portion, the arm 83 is provided with a shoulder 86 (see Fig. 1) past which Ythe pin 84 is adapted to move upon the movement of the plate 15 into the position as shown in Fig. 2. Means is provided for moving lthe arm 83 out of operative pressure relationship to the plate 16 in timed relation to the rotation of the drum 26 so as to enable the pin 84 to move downwardly for permitting the plate 16 to swing by gravity into its operative paper-stopping position, as shown in Fig. 1. This meanscomprises a cam arm 81 fixedly mounted upon the shaft 3d upon which the paper guide supporting brackets 35 are journalled ashereinabove described. An arm 88 is xedly mounted upon the shaft 34 connected by means of a coiled spring 89 with a pin 89a carr-iedby the frame member 3| for holding the shaft 34 turned to the limit of its motion in counterclockwise direction in'Figs. 1 and 2. When the cam arm 81 is moved to the limit of its upward movement into the position as shown' in Fig. 1, said arm 81 is brought into camming engagement with the llower end of the arm v83 for forcing such arm 83 backwardly against the action of the spring 85 `for carrying the shoulder 86 out of the-path of the pin 84 so as to permit the plate 16 to swing by itsV weight into the position as shown in said Fig. 1.
`Means is provided for limiting the counterclockwise movement of the shaft 34 in Fig.V l, comprising a set screw 98 carried by the arm 88 in position to engage a crossbar 9| extending across the machine between the frame members 3|. Means is also provided for rocking the shaft 34 in clockwise direction in Fig. 1 against the action of the spring 89 in timed relation to the rotation of the drum. This means'comprises an arm 92 provided at its lower end with a roller 93 in position to engage a cam 94 iiXedly` mounted upon the drum 26. The arrangement is such thatat a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum 26 the cam 94 is brought into operative engagement with the roller 93 for swinging the arm 92 and the cam arm 81 in clockwise direction in Figs. 1 and 2 into the position as shown in Fig. 2 for permitting the arm 83 to swing forwardly into the position shown in said Fig. 2, at which position the arm 83 presses against the plate 16 for holding it yieldingly in the turned position as shown in said Fig. 2. When the roller 93 has left the cam 94 by reason of the rotation of the drum in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 1, the spring 89 serves to swing the arm B8 and the cam arm 81 in counterclockwise direction for forcing the arm 83 backwardly so as to permit the paper stop plate 16 to move to its operative position as shown in Fig. 1 and as above described.
With the plate 16 in the position shown in Fig. 1, an operator takes a copy sheet or a copy sheet assembly from the pile on the table 33 and places it in position upon the paper guide as shown in said Fig. 1, being enabled readily to adjust the assembly to the desired position by reference to the pins 55 and the plate 16. When the plate 16 is turned to the position as shown in Fig. 2, the copy sheet assembly 56 moves downwardly along the paper guide toward the platen roller 32 into engagement with the margin bar 51, as shown in said Fig. 2. This movement of the copy sheet assembly takes place shortly prior the margin bar 51 is 'being withdrawn and before the copy sheet assembly is gripped between the segmental drum and the platen roller 32, a soft and readily yielding holding member is provided, together with means for moving the holding member forwardly out of engagement with the paper guide in timed relation to the rotation of the drum for enabling the operator readily to insert a copy sheet assembly.
In the arrangement shown, `the holding member is provided with a curved surface portion adapted to engage the copy sheet for pressing it against the paper guide and thus holding the copy sheet releasably in position, such member being preferably in the form of a roller' 95 rotatably mounted by means of a shaft 95a between swingingly mounted arms 96 at opposite sides of the machine, such arms being pivotally mounted upon the axes o'f the rollers 36. For holding the roller 95 yieldingly in the position as shown in Fig. 2, springs 91 are mounted in position for engagement with the arms 96, such springs being mounted upon a sheet metal housing 98 at each side of the machine, as is best shown in Fig. 4. The roller 95 as shown is formed of spongerubber so as to 'be adapted to apply pressure against a copy sheet assembly across the full width of the machine even though the assembly is of uneven thickness. This readily yielding type of pressure device is important for insuring proper control of the copy sheet assembly.
The means for moving the roller 95 forwardly out of pressure relationship to the lowermost plate 38 of the paper guide is controlled by the shaft 34. This means comprises lugs 99 extending inwardly from the lower ends of the arms 96.
The lug 99 at one side of the machine is arranged to have camining engagement with the cam arm 81 above described as being mounted upon said shaft 34. At the opposite side of the machine, a cam arm |08 is provided (at the left in Fig. 3), such cam arm |08 being fixedly mounted upon the shaft 34 in parallel relation to the cam arm 81 above referred to. The arrangement is such that upon upward movement of the cam arms 81 and |00 such arms have effective camming engagement with the lugs 99 of the arms 96 for swinging such arms forwardly from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1 for moving the roller 95 into spaced relation to the obliquely disposed paper guide.
It is believed to be unnecessary to set forth in detail the operation of the machine in addition to the description already given. The margin bar 51 is maintained in its inoperative position as shown in Fig. 1 during the major portion of the time but is moved by the springs 62 into operative position as shown in Fig. 2 under the control of the cam 61 as soon as the drum reaches a position for permitting said bar 51 to be moved inwardly into the opening 28 of the drum, the construction being similar in this respect to the arrangement shown by said prior Marchev Patent No. 2,150,744.
The cam 82 by which the paper stop plate 16 is moved out of Yoperative position is comparatively short, so as to permit said plate 16 during the greater portion'of the time to stand in its operative position as shown in Fig. 1. The arrangement is such that when the cam 82 moves out of engagement with the roller 8| the arm 8U is swung by gravity in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 1 for permitting the return of the plate 16 to its operative paper-stopping position, such movement of the plate 16 being effected also by gravity, as above described, and taking place promptly upon the retraction of the arm 83 by the cam arm 81.
The cam 94 is also comparatively short so as to hold the cam arms 81 and |80 in their lowered position against the action of the spring 89 during only a small portion of a revolution of the drum. The roller 95 is accordingly held by said spring 89 during the greater part of the time in spaced relation to the paper guide so as to permit of the insertion of a copy sheet into adjusted position on the plate 16, the roller 95 being moved backwardly into pressure relationship to the paper guide for a short period only at the time when the margin bar 51 is being withdrawn. The pressure of the arm 83 by the spring 85 against the plate 16 for holding the plate in turned position, as shown in Fig. 2, is also limited to a short period by reason of the shortness of the cam 94, but such pressure continues until after the arm 18 and the roller or lug 19 have been swung in counterclockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. l. When the pressure of the arm 83 on the plate 16 is relieved by reason of the upward movement of the arm 81, the plate 16 is then moved by gravity to the operative paperstopping position as shown in Fig. l. Inasmuch as the cams 82 and 94, by which the plate 16 is moved and held out of operative position, are together comparatively short circumferentially of therdrum, the plate 16 remains in operative position during the major portion of the time.
From a study of the several cams and their cooperating parts in connection with the partial description of the parts as above set forth, it will be understood that the margin bar 51 is moved inwardly by the springs 62 into operative paperengaging position as soon as the opening 28 of the segmental drum in its rotation in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 2 comes opposite to the margin bar. Some little time before the drum reaches the position as shown in said Fig. 2, the roller 8l is forced outwardly by the cam 82 for moving the paper stop plate 16 from its operative position asv shownv in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2 for permitting the copy sheet on the plate to move downwardly along the guide into engagement with the margin bar 51. After the plate 16 has been displaced from its operative position, the cam roller 93 is moved outwardly by engagement with the cam 94 so as to move the cam arms B1 and |90 downwardly for permitting the springs 91 to press the anti-friction holding member 95 backwardly and for permitting the spring 85 to move the arm B3 forwardly into pressure relationship to the plate 16. In this position, the roller 95 serves to hold the copy sheet 56 yieldingly in position with respect to the paper guide. Shortly after the roller 95l is moved into pressure relationship with respect to the copy sheet on the paper guide, the cam roller 65 is forced outwardly by the cam 61 for carrying the margin bar 51 out of engagement with the copy sheet which is then held in position by the roller 95 with the leading end portion of the copy sheet in position between the platen. roller 32 and the closely approaching portion of the gelatin band 30, on the segmental drum. When the gelatin band 30 upon continued rotation of the drum comes into pressure relationship with the platen roller 32 so as to grip the copy sheet, such sheet is drawn forwardly with the drum, the roller 95 being free to rotate for permitting such movement of the copy sheet. The cam 82 vthen passes out of engagement with the cam roller 9| for permitting the arm 158 and the actuating roller or lug 19 to move upwardly out of engagement with the paper stop plate 16, and
shortly thereafter the cam 94 passes out of ensagement with the cam roller 93 so as to permitJ the spring 89 to move the cam arms 81 and les upwardly for moving'the roller 95 forwardly out of pressure relationship to the paper guide and for moving the spring-pressed arm 83 backwardly out of engagement with the plate 16.
The arrangement is such that the movement of the plate 1t into its paper-stopping position as shown in Fig. 1 does not interfere with the continued downward movement of the copy sheet 55 under the influence of the drum 2S and the platen roller 32, with the result that the operator is free to place the next succeeding copy sheet or copy sheet assembly in position on the paper guide so as to be supported by the plate 16 without waiting for the completion of the movement of the gripped copy sheet between the platen roller and the drum.
By the use of the construction as above described, I have very substantially improved the operation of a duplicating machine of this type.
yThe space within which the various operating parts are located is quite limited so that a compact arrangement is necessary for preventing one part from interfering with the operation of another part. By the use of my improved arrangement, the proper adjustment of the copy sheet is very easily effected so as to insure that the copy Vsheet shall be accurately positioned in the desired printing relationshipr to the design carried by the gelatin band 30.
The arrangement preferably corresponds with that shown by the prior Marchev patent above mentioned with respect to the action of the paper guide, in that the arrangement is preferably such that the guide of the present machine is arranged so as to be adapted to swing about the shaft Mas an axis. The arrangement is such that when the paper guide is swung forwardly as described by said prior Marchev patent the rollers 36 at opposite sides of the machine are. brought into engagement with levers I0!V on the framework for moving the platen roller 32 outwardly with respect to the drum so as to prevent engagement of the platen roller with the face of the drum. This arrangement however forms no part of the present invention and is of no importance except as it provides additional difficulty with respect to effecting the desired operating relationship of the parts.
While the form and arrangement of parts as above described are preferred, the invention isr not to be limited thereto excep so far as the claims may be so limited, it being understood that changes might well be made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1.` In a duplicating machine, the combination` vof a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is. adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller,
margin bar means movably mounted in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower end portion oppositeto said platen roller, means eiective at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to move said margin bar means automatically outof the path of a sheet on said paper guide, .and soft readily yielding means adapted by engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide to hold the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide after said margin bar means has been withdrawn from engagement with the sheet.
2. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its. peripheral surface,
a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward saidl platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted in position for Aengagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower end portion opposite to said platen roller, means effective at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to move said margin bar means automatically out of the path of a sheet on said paper guide, and a roller rotatably mounted on a movable axis adapted by engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide to hold the sheet yieldingly against ymovement downwardly on the guide after said margin bar means has been withdrawn from engagement with the sheet.
3. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably. mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower end portion opposite to said platen roller, means effective at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to move said margin bar means automatically out of the path of a sheet on said paper guide, a roller rotatably mounted on a movable axis adapted by engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide to hold the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide after sait* margin bar means has been withdrawnfrom engagement with the sheet, and means for moving said holdingroller automatically into and out of pressure relationship to said paper guide at predetermined points in a revolution of the drum.
4. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower end portion opposite to said platen roller, means effective at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to move said margin bar means automatically out of the path of a sheet on said paper guide, a roller rotatably mounted on a movable axis adapted by engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide to hold the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide after said margin bar means has been withdrawn from engagement with the sheet, and means comprising a cam adapted to rotate with the drum for moving said holding roller automatically into pressure relationship with said paper guide prior to the withdrawal of said margin bar means and for moving said ,roller automatically into spaced relation toV said paper guide after the sheet is gripped between the drum and the platen roller so as to permit ready placement of the succeeding copy sheet into position on the paper guide.
5. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in posi- 'tion to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower end portion opposite to said platen roller, means effective at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to move said margin bar means automatically out of the path of a sheet on said paper guide, arms swingingly mounted at opposite sides of said paper guide, a roller rotatably mounted between said arms in position to engage a copy sheet on said paper guide for holding the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide, and means automatically actuated for moving said arms for carrying the roller into pressure relationship with the paper guide before said margin bar means has been withdrawn from engagement with the copy sheet and for moving the roller into spaced relation to said paper guide afterV the copy sheet has been gripped between the drum and the platen roller.
6. In a duplicating machina-the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower end portion opposite to said platen roller, means effective at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to move said margin bar means automatically out ofthe path of a sheet on said paper guide, arms swingingly mounted at opposite sides of said paper guide, a roller rotatably mounted between said arms in position to engage a copy sheet on said paper guide for holding the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide, yielding means normallyvpressing said roller toward said paper guide; swingingly mounted members adapted by a stroke in one direction to have camming engagement with said arms for moving said roller against the action of said yielding means out of pressure relationship to said paper guide, and means comprising a cam rotatable with the drum forV giving saidswingingly mounted members movements in timed relation for 'carrying the roller into pressure relationship with the paper guide before said margin bar means has been withdrawn from engagement with the copy sheet and for moving said roller automatically into spaced relation to said paper guide after the copy sheet has been gripped between the drum and the platen roller.
7. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower end portion opposite to said platen'roller, means effective at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to move said margin bar means automatically out of the path of a sheet on said paper guide, arms swingingly mounted at opposite sides of said paper guide, a'roller rotatably mounted between said arms in position to engage a copy sheet on said paper guide for holding the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide, yielding means normally pressing said roller toward said paper guide, a rock shaft rotatably mounted adjacent to said roller, cam devices on said rock shaft adapted by engagement with said arms to move vsaid roller against the action of said yielding means outvof pressure relationship tosaid paper guide, and means comprising a cam rotatable with the drum for giving said rock shaft rotary movements in timed relation for carrying the roller into pressure relationship with the paper guide before said margin bar means has been withdrawn from engagement with the copy sheet and for moving said roller automatically into spaced relation to said paper guide after the copy sheet has been gripped between the drum and the platen roller.
8. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen rolleraa plate pivotallyv mounted at the lower edge of sald paper guide adapted normally to stand at about a right angle with respect to the guide and adapted to swing downwardly and backwardly out of operative position and adapted in its operative position to engage and stop a copy sheet moving downwardly in close proximity to the guide for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet squarely on the guide above the platen roller, and means adapted at a predetermined point in the revolution of said drum automatically to move said plate out of its paperstopping position so as to release the sheet for movement downwardly on said guide, the arrangement being such that the movement of the plate upwardly and forwardly into operative position for stopping the next following copy sheet may be eected while a copy sheet is still moving downwardly along the guide.
9. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted off center adapted normally to stand in position to stop a copy sheet on said paper guide in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet on said paper guide and adapted in an alternative overbalanced position to guide a sheet to said platen roller, and means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of said drum automatically to move said plate to its overbalanced position so as to release a copy sheet thereon for downward movement to said platen roller.
10. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal` axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface,
a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to Y press on the drum, *an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted on said paper guide adapted in one position to guide a sheet to said platen roller and adapted in an alternative position to stop a copy sheet in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet squarely on the paper guide, means comprising a cam carried around by the drum adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum automatically to move the forward portion of said plate downwardly Quickly and sharply out of its paper-stopping position so as to release a copy sheet thereon for downward movement by gravity to said platen roller, and margin bar means for stopping the downward movement of the copy sheet with its leading end portion positioned opposite to said platen roller.

' plate pivotally mounted off center adapted normally to stand in position to stop a copy sheet on said paper guide in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller `for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet onsaid paper guide and adapted in an alternative overbalanced position to guide a sheet tov said platen roller, a rock. shaft rotatably mounted adjacent to said plate, arms on said rockshaft adapted by pressure downwardly on the forward portion of said plate to carry the plate out of itsv paper-stopping position so as to release a copy sheet on the guide for downward movement to said platen roller, and means comprising a cam rotating with the drum adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to actuate said rock shaft for moving said plate out of its paperstopping position.
12. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted on said paper guide adapted in one position to guide a sheet to said platen roller and adapted in an alternative position to stop a copy sheet in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet squarely on the paper guide, means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of saidv drum automaticallyto move said plate out of its paperstopping position so as to permit the sheet to slideA downwardly on said guide, means adapted by pressure on said plate to hold the plate out of said paper-stopping position, and means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution o f said drum to relieve the pressure of said holding means on said plate so as to permit the plate to move to operative paper-stopping position.

In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted off center adapted normally to stand in position to stop a copy sheet on said peper guide in upwardly spaced relation to saidv platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet on said paper guide and adapted in an alternative overbalanced position to guide a sheet to said platen roller, means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of said drum automatically to move said plate to its overbalanced position so as to release a copy sheet thereon for downward movement to said platen roller, means adapted by pressure' on said plate to hold the plate in its overbalanced position, and means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to relieve the pressure of said holding means on said plate so as to permit the plate to move by gravity to its operative paper-stopping position.
14. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliduely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted off center adapted normally to stand in position to stop a copy sheet on said paper guide in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet on said paper guide and adapted in an alternative overbalanced position to guide a sheet to said platen roller, means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of said drum automatically to move said plate to its overbalanced position so as to release a copy sheet thereon for downward movement to said platen roller, a spring-pressed arm pivotally mounted adjacent to said plate adapted by pressure on said plate to hold the plate yieldingly in its overbalanced position, and means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to relieve the pressure of said arm on said plate so as to permit the plate to move by gravity to its operative paper-stopping position.

In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to' move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted on said paper guide adapted in one position to guide a sheet to said platen roller and adapted in an alternative position to stop a copy sheet in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet squarely on the paper guide, means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of said drum automatically to move said plate out of its paper-stopping position so as to permit the sheet to slide downwardly on said guide, means adapted by pressure on said plate to hold the plate out of said paper-stopping position, readily yielding means adapted by engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide to hold the sheet yieldingly against movement Vdownwardly on the guide, and means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of the drum to relieve the pressure of said holding means on said plate so as to permit the plate to move to its operative paper-stopping position and to move said paperholding means out of pressure relationship to said paper guide.

In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted on said paper guide adapted in one position to guide a sheet to said platen roller and adapted in an alternative position to stop a copy sheet in upwardly spaced relation to' said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet squarely on the paper guide, means adapted at a predetermined point in a revolution of said drum automatically to move said plate out of its paper-stopping position so as to permit the sheet to slide downwardly on said guide, means adapted by pressure on said plate to hold the plate out of said paper-stopping position, readily yielding means adapted by engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide to hold the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide, an arm swingingly mounted adjacent to said plate adapted upon an operative stroke in one direction to have a camming engagement with said plate holding means for relieving its pressure on the plate so as to permit the plate to move into paper-stopping position and serving by a camming action to move said copy sheet holding means out of pressure relationship to said paper guide, and means for giving said arm swinging CTI movements alternately in opposite directions in timed relation to the rotation of said drum.
17. In a duplicating machine, the combination downwardly toward said platen roller, a platepivotally mounted in position and adapted normally to stand in position for stopping a copy sheet on said paper guide in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet on said paper guide and adapted in an alternative position to guide a sheet to said platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted below said plate in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower edge portion opposite to said platen roller, means for moving said plate out of operative sheet stopping position so as'to release a sheet for movement downwardly to said margin bar into position to be gripped by the drum and platen roller, readily yielding means adapted by pressure on a copy sheet supported by the margin bar to hold the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly when the margin bar is withdrawn from sheet supporting position, and means for withdrawing said margin b-ar downwardly.
18. In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely disposed paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, a plate pivotally mounted in position and adapted normally to stand in position for stopping a copy sheet on said paper guide in upwardly spaced relation to said platen roller for enabling an operator readily to position a copy sheet on said paper guide and adapted in an alternative position to guide a sheet to said platen roller, margin bar means movably mounted below said plate in position for engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide for supporting its lower edge portion opposite to said platen roller, a soft readily yielding pressure roller rotatably mounted on a movable axis adapted by engagement with a copy sheet on said paper guide to hold the sheet yieldingly against movement downwardly on the guide, and means operated in timed relation to the rotation of said drum for moving said plate into and out of paper-stopping position, for moving said margin bar into and out of position for supporting a copy sheet on said paper guide, and for moving said pressure roller into position for yieldingly supporting a copy sheet after said plate has been moved out of paper-stopping position and before said margin bar means has been withdrawn from paper-supporting position.

a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, an obliquely positioned paper guide along which a copy sheet is adapted to move downwardly toward said platen roller, arms pivotally mounted adjacent to said platen roller at opposite sides of the machine, means for swinging said arms in unison, a margin bar connected between said arms so as to be movable thereby into and out of position for engaging the lower edge of a copy sheet moving downwardly on said paper guide, the connection between at least one end of said margin bar and the corresponding arm comprising an eccentric by an adjustment of which the angular relation of the margin bar with respect to the platen roller `can be changed for bringing the margin bar into parallelism with the platen roller, and releasable means for holding said eccentric yieldingly against rotary movement for holding the margin bar effectively in its adjusted position.

In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, a paper guide extending across above said drum comprising supporting parts in spaced relation to each other for supporting a copy sheet for movement obliquely downwardly toward said platen roller, and means adjustable transversely of said paper guide comprising pins extending forwardly between the spaced supporting parts of the guide adapted by engagement with at least one edge of a copy sheet to control positioning of the sheet on the guide.

In a duplicating machine, the combination of a dum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, a paper guide extending across above said drum comprising end frame members at opposite sides of the machine and supporting parts connected in spaced relation to each other between said end frame members for supporting a copy sheet for movement obliquely downwardly toward said platen roller, a rod extending across between said end frame members, a bar slidably mounted on said rod so as to be held against'movement angularly with respect thereto, pins on said slide bar extending forwardly through the spaces between said supporting parts adapted by engagement with one edge of a copy sheet to control the positioning ofthe sheet on the guide, and meanslfor holding said slide bar releasably in adjusted position on said rod.

In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, a paper guide extending across above said drum comprising end frame membersat opposite sides of the machine and supporting parts connected in spaced relation to each other between said end frame members for supporting a copy sheet for movement obliquely downwardly toward said platen roller, a rod extending across between said end frame members,Y
bars slidably mounted on said rod so as to be held against movement angularly with respect thereto, pins on each of said slide bars extending forwardly through the spaces' between said supporting parts adapted by engagement with the edges of a copy sheet to control the positioning of the sheet on the guide, and means in connection with each of said slide bars for holding the bar releasably in adjusted position on said rod.

In a duplicating machine, the combination of a drum rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis and having a recess in its peripheral surface, a platen roller rotatably mounted in position to press on the drum, a paper guide extending across above said drum comprising end frame members at opposite sides of the machine and supporting parts connected in spaced relation to each other between said end frame members for supporting a copy sheet for movement obliquely downwardly toward said platen roller, a rod extending across between said end frame members, a bar slidably mounted on said rod so as to be held.
against movement angularly with respect thereto, pins on said slide bar extending forwardly through the spaces between said supporting parts adapted by engagement with one side edge of a copy sheet to control the positioning of the sheet on the guide, a lever movably mounted on said slide bar in position to have holding engagement with said rod for holding the slide bar against movement along the rod, and spring means for pressing said lever releasably into holding position.
