Abstract

997,082. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. March 25, 1964 [April 19, 1963], No. 12595/64. Heading B6F. A typewriter is provided with sheet-feeding means comprising a pivotally retractable bail 8, Fig. 1, adapted to coact with a platen 1 and a bail-operating mechanism, including a lever 21, responsive to the leading edge of a sheet 3, Fig. 2, as it is advanced by rotation of the platen and operable during continued operation of the platen first to pivotally retract the bail 8 from the platen to allow the sheet to advance between the bail and the platen and thereafter to advance the bail so that it again coacts with the platen to hold the sheet thereagainst. In operation, the sheet 3 is inserted between the platen 1 and a guide plate 4 which directs the sheet to rear-feed rollers 5, which in turn advance the sheet to front-feed rollers 6. The leading edge of the sheet, which advances tangentially to the platen and operates the control lever 21 which via a link 22 and an arm 23 engages a pawl 16 with a ratchet wheel 19 integral with the platen, whereupon on continued rotation of the platen the pawl 16 which is pivotally mounted on a bracket 15 connected to the bail 8 pivots the bail 8 about its pivot stud 12 to retract the bail from the platen. On passing through a median line a toggle spring 24 throws the bail over the bail being arrested by a portion 25 engaging an abutment 26. Simultaneously the angular counterclockwise movement of the bracket 15 disengages the pawl 16 by means of a flange 27 and engages a pawl 31 mounted on arm 30 of the bracket 15 with the ratchet wheel 19. Further rotation of the platen causes the pawl 31 to rock the bail 8 clockwise about the stud 12, whereupon the toggle spring 24 acts to advance the bail 8 towards the platen. By this time the sheet of paper has advanced sufficiently for its upper portion to lie between the bail and the platen so that it may be engaged by rollers 9 on the bail rod of the bail 8.
