Hay bales X after transport up a shoot 15 by the action of an endless chain conveyer 18 are engaged by faster moving endless conveyer chains 61, 61, and discharged on to a plate 70 which may be manually controlled to (1) lie at the inclination shown, (2) similarly inclined in the opposite direction, or (3) level. The chains 61, 61 and platform 70 are mounted on a carriage 23 (Fig. 2), which has wheels 42 in engagement with rails formed by frame members 13 of the conveyer 18. A pair of driving sprockets 31, 32 of the conveyer chains 61, 61 are driven by the engagement of the chain of the conveyer 18 as it passes over a sprocket 33 and under a pulley 34. The sprockets 31, 32 are smaller than the sprocket 33 to provide the faster speed of the chains 61, 61. The platform 70 is pivotally mounted about an axis A,A and is secured to a member 72. The latter is pivotally connected to links 73, 74 each of which at its lower end is slidably mounted between spaced members 39, 40. An outwardlyacting spring device 81 acts between respective intermediate points on the arms 73, 74. By pulling on a cable 90 secured at 85 to the lower end of the arm 73, the platform 70 may thus be caused to tilt into the position shown in Fig. 1. By pulling on a cable 89 the platform 70 may then be caused to jump back to a horizontal position, and then to an inclined position opposite to the inclination shown. The carriage is held in position relative to the frame 13 of the conveyer 18 by maintaining tension on the cables 89, 90, since when this tension is released, the carriage will tend to move under the action of the chain of the conveyer 18.
