Abstract
The invention comprises the ammonium, amine and alkaline earth metal salts of 3,5-dihalo-4-hydroxybenzonitriles (both halogen atoms being identical) and also the alkali metal salts, except where the metal is Na (halogen=Cl, Br or I) or K (halogen = I). The salts are prepared conventionally from the dihalohydroxynitriles and the latter by direct halogenation of 4-hydroxybenzonitrile or-additionally, in the case of iodination-of 4-acetoxybenzonitrile.ALSO:Herbicidal compounds are 3,5-dihalo-4-hydroxybenzonitriles (both halogen atoms being identical) and their ammonium, amine, alkali and alkaline earth metal salts, as well as their esters with acetic acid. Compositions may be in the form of aerosols, dusts, granules, wettable powders and aqueous, organic or aqueous -organic compositions including emulsifiable concentrates. In addition to the usual adjuvants, the compositions may contain other herbicidally-active compounds, e.g. 4-(2\sv,4\sv-dichloro-or 4\sv-chloro-2\sv-methylphenoxy), butyric acid and the analagous phenoxyacetic and phenoxypropionic acids; 2,2-dichloropropionic acid; trichloroacetic acid, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole and 4-chlorobut-2-ynyl N-(3\sv-chlorophenyl) carbamate.
