Abstract

The invention comprises 3,5-dihalo-4-acyloxy-(except acetoxy), or -alkoxycarbonyloxy-benzonitriles, the two halogen atoms being identical. These compounds are prepared by conventional acylation or by reacting the 4-hydroxy precursors with alkyl haloformate. In specified compounds, the halogen atoms are Cl, Br or I, and the acylate is a trichloroacetate, 2,2-dichloropropionate, 2-methylpentanoate, octanoate, glutarate, benzoate, 4-toluenesulphonate, crotonate, furoate, propionate, butyrate, myristate, 2,4 - dichlorophenoxyacetate, 4 - (21,41 - dichlorophenoxy) butyrate, 2 - (41 - chloro - 21 - methylphenoxy) propionate or methoxyformate.ALSO:Herbicidal compounds are 3,5-dihalo-4-acyloxy (except acetoxy), oralkoxycarbonyloxy-benzonitriles, both halogen atoms being identical. Compositions may be in the form of aerosols, dusts, granules, wettable powders and aqueous, organic or aqueous-organic compositions including emulsifiable concentrates. In addition to the usual adjuvants, the compositions may contain other herbicidally-active compounds, e.g. 4-(2\sv,4\sv-dichloro- or 4\sv-chloro-2\sv-methylphenoxy)butyric acid and the analogous phenoxyacetic and phenoxypropionic acids; 2,2-dichloro-propionic acid; trichloroacetic acid, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole and 4-chlorobut-2-ynyl N-(3\sv-chlorophenyl) carbamate.
