Abstract

Driving arrangements.-A rotary printing press unit comprises a number of printing couples each driven by a vertical shaft 11, 11a &c., each vertical shaft being driven from a horizontal main shaft 3 through gearing permitting reversal of the direction of rotation of at least one of the vertical shafts and its associated printing couple. As shown in a printing unit comprising two printing couples of which the impression cylinders 13, 13a, are illustrated, the drive of the shaft 11 is reversible and that of the shaft 1 1a is non-reversible. The shaft 11 is geared to the impression cylinder 13 of its couple and at its lower end carries a bevel gear 21 meshing with two gears 61, 63 rotatably mounted on the main shaft 3. The gears 61, 63 are toothed internally as well as externally. Between the gears 61, 63 is a sleeve 89 axially movable along the main shaft 3 but splined thereto for rotation therewith. Gears 85, 87 are carried by the sleeve 89 so that by axial movement either the gear 87 can be engaged with the internal teeth of gear 63 or the gear 85 can similarly be engaged with gear 61, the direction of rotation of the shaft 11, depending upon which pair of gears is engaged. With the sleeve 89 positioned as shown, the shaft 11 is not driven. Movement of the sleeve 89 is effected by rotation of a hand wheel. A similar drive arrangement 9 is provided for the shaft 11a except that the gear corresponding to gear 61 is omitted, so that by movement of a sleeve 89 the shaft 11a can be coupled to or uncoupled from the main shaft 3, but its direction of rotation cannot be reversed. Inking apparatus.-A shaft 27, parallel to the main shaft 3 has worm gears engaging fountain-roller drive-gears, and is driven directly from the main shaft by sprockets 31 and chain belt 33.
