Abstract

1,065,711. Insulated pipes; pipe joints. DICK'S ASBESTOS & INSULATING CO. Ltd. Sept. 27, 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 40652/62. Headings F2G and F2P. A thermally insulated pipe comprises an inner pipe 1 coaxially housed in a self-supporting outer cover 3 of greater diameter than the inner pipe to define an annular chamber which contains a substantially rigid foamed synthetic plastic 5, the ends of the inner pipe protruding beyond the outer cover. Preferably, the foamed plastic is of polyurethane and the outer cover of polythene. The inner pipe is assembled in the outer pipe and located coaxially by means of supports 6 in the form of segment pieces of insulating material having a low coefficient of thermal conductivity. To provide uncovered end pieces the ends are blanked off and the foamed plastic introduced through an aperture 7 in the outer cover or an aperture in one of the end blanking- off pieces. To facilitate air release small holes are provided in the outer cover or blanking-off pieces. The annular chamber may be divided into zones by support discs if required. The two pipe ends may be joined by a threaded sleeve or welded together and the gap between adjacent sleeve ends closed by a further sleeve slid across the gap, the gap then being filled with foamed plastic, or the gap may be lagged with suitable material and the sleeve slid over the lagging.
