Abstract

In a spot-type disc brake of the kind having a casing 3 which straddles the disc 1 and is axially slidable relative to a fixed support 2, an hydraulic cylinder 5, disposed between one arm of the easing and one pad, is generally of circular section but has an integral portion 15 providing a rectangular abutment surface to match the pad 8, a similar rectangular abutment surface 14 being provided on the other arm of the casing 3 to match the other pad 7. The pads are applied by relative movement of the cylinder and its piston 6, to cause the cylinder to apply pad 8 and the piston, which is secured to the first arm of the casing, to apply pad 7 by axial movement of the casing. A spigot 13 on the portion 15 locates pad 8, both pads being guided in apertures 9 in the support 2. A lever 16 is provided for manual operation of the brake via a slack adjuster 21 which automatically sets the " off " position of the pads during hydraulic operation, since the inner end 18 of the lever is trapped between the portion 15 and an abutment 19 on the cylinder.
