Apparatus for drying sludge comprises a tower formed from superposed elements 1 . . . 6 and subdivided by inner plates 9 . . . 13 alternately formed with a central aperture, and an outer circumference less than the tower walls so that material introduced through an aperture 30 passes downwardly through the tower to a lower outlet duct 22 alternately moving inwardly and outwardly on the plates for passage to the next lowest under the influence of stirrer arms 17, 18 mounted radially on a vertically movable driveshaft 15. Supply conduits 27 . . . 29 feed heated air to the tower and the stirrer arms enclose angles which are less than 180 degrees.
