Fuel and air are supplied to a fluidized bed 3 through a horizontal array of spaced nozzles 6 extending upwardly, and each nozzle is connected to an air distributer below the array and by individual conduits 9 to a fuel distributer. The air distributer may be in the form of a box 8 or boxes forming the hearth of a fluidized bed reactor, and the fuel distributer may be a second box 10 below the air distributer. The fuel outlet from each nozzle may be horizontally directed, or the fuel and air may be mixed within the nozzle, Fig. 4, a baffle 24 preventing bed material blocking the nozzle. The air distributer may be in the form of pipes arranged to form a hearth for the reactor, spaces between the pipes allowing for discharge of bed material. The fuel distributer may comprise pipes 19, within or below the air pipes 18, Fig. 4.
