Abstract

1,063,502. Electric analogue calculating. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Nov. 25, 1964 [Feb. 14, 1964], No. 6352/64. Heading G4G. Plural, e.g. three first amplifiers A1, A2, A3 (Fig. 1), of positive gain are energized in parallel from an input 1 and their outputs are connected over the anode-cathode circuit of respective diodes D1, D2, D3 to a common amplifier AA of negative gain, supplying the output 2 from which linear feedback paths F1, F2, F3 of predetermined law are provided to the inputs of A1, A2, A3 ; the required convex functional curve being approximated (Fig. 2) by a combination of straight lines a1 a2, a3 determined respectively by A1, F1 ; A2, F2; A3, F3. A concave curve may be synthesized by reversing the diodes or making A1, A2, A3 of negative gain and AA of positive gain. The junctions of the straight line portions may be smoothed by inserting ohmic or non-linear resistors in series with the diodes (Fig. 3, not shown). The synthesized functional responses may be, e.g. y = x<SP>2</SP> or y = log. x.
