Abstract

1414787 Amplifying circuits MARCONI CO Ltd 18 May 1973 [22 July 1972] 34385/72 Heading H3W An A.C. amplifying arrangement includes an A.C. amplifier 2, the input channel to which is provided with the parallel combination of a non-linear device 4 having substantially the same distortion charactersitic as the amplifier 2, and a delay retwork 5 having substantially the same delay time as the non-linear device 4, whereby in operation the parallel combination provides an output having distortion substantially equal to but opposite in character to that produced by the amplifier 2. In the embodiment, amplifier 2 is a travelling wave tube, the input at terminal 1 being divided by power splitting coupler 7 between a low power amplifier 4 and a passive delay line 5 having twice the output level of the amplifier 4, so that by subtraction of the outputs in circuit 6, which may be a magic-Tee hybrid coupler, the desired distortion characteristic is obtained (Figs. 2(a)-2(c), not shown). Alternatively, the delay line 5 may be replaced by an amplifier similar to amplifier 4, run at a low level so as to give little distortion, the dividing and combining networks 7, 6 being of such unequal ratio as to give the desired distorted output.
