Abstract

A pile fabric is produced on a warp knitting- machine by knitting independent chains of stitches 7 through a base fabric 1 and causing pile loops 2 on the opposite face of the fabric to be extended by looping the yarns from the guides around loop forming members 6 as they feed the yarns to the needles 3. The loops are extended by racking the members 6 sideways after the needles have been withdrawn and this sideways movement occurs in opposite directions in succesive course. The extent of the pile loops can be varied by varying the racking movement of the members 6 or by not moving them at all. Patterning effects can be achieved by racking some members to a greater extent than others so as to produce loops of different lengths. Points can be used for the members 6 which when retained stationery fail to create any pile loops in the fabric.
