Abstract
A method for providing an organic polymer surface layer coating on individual particles of a finely divided and dispersed water insoluble pigment, comprises dispersing in an aqueous slurry of said pigment an emulsified water immiscible organic liquid consisting of ethylenically unsaturated monomer or monomers which will form the organic polymer coating, and effecting polymerization of the monomer or monomers on sand pigment particles while heating and agitating said slurry. Cross-linking agents, e.g. ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, may be added to obtain an inert and insoluble coating. Ethylenically unsaturated monomers which are not inherently water soluble may be temporarily insolubilized, e.g. by the addition of sodium sulphate. Coloured coatings may be obtained by adding to the water-immiscible phase a dye, e.g. a base or acidic dye which will chemically combine with one of the monomers. Pigments exemplified are titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, talc, aluminium oxide, chromic oxide, barium sulphate, copper dust and even shredded paper.ALSO:A method for providing an organic polymer surface layer coating on individual particles of a finely divided and dispersed water-insoluble pigment, comprises dispersing in an aqueous slurry of said pigment an emulsified water-immiscible organic liquid consisting of ethylenically unsaturated monomer or monomers which will form the organic polymer coating, and effecting polymerization of the monomer or monomers on said pigment particles while heating and agitating said slurry. Pigments exemplified are titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, talc, aluminium oxide, chromic oxide, copper dust and even shredded paper.
