Abstract
5-Nitrofurfural diacetate is made by adding a mixture of furfural diacetate and potassium nitrate to a sulphuric acid monohydrate reaction medium while maintaining the resulting reaction mixture at a temperature not exceeding 10 DEG C., diluting the reaction mixture with ice-water on the completion of nitration, adjusting the pH of the diluted mixture to 3 to 4 and extracting the nitrofurfural diacetate from the mixture, potassium nitrate and furfural diacetate being employed in a molar ratio of up to 1.4: 1. It is preferred to use temperatures below 0 DEG C. and to operate under anaerobic conditions. The term "ice-water" is defined as including the addition of dry ice to the reaction medium. The pH can be suitably adjusted by the addition of sodium carbonate or trisodium phosphate. The product may be finally extracted with ether.
