Abstract

PURPOSE: p-Aminobenzaldehyde is reacted with aqueous sulfuric acid rapidly under heating and after cooling, converted to the diazonium salt and hydrolyzed to produce titled compound in high yield without formation of tar.
CONSTITUTION: p-Aminobenzaldehyde is heated with an aqueous sulfuric acid of 20W50wt% concentration at 60W100°C for 10W30min and immediately cooled with cold water or ice water. The salt is diazotized and hydrolyzed in water or an aqueous sulfuric acid to produce said p-hydroxybenzaldehyde. During diazotization, the addition of urea is effective in an amount required for decomposing the excess sodium nitrate.
USE: Intermediate of medicines, agricultural chemicals, perfumes.
