Abstract

An electric resistance butt welder comprises a fixed clamping head 3, Fig. 2 (not shown), a movable clamping head, two rods 5 mounted in the head 3 and symmetrically arranged relative to and in a common plane with the work to function as guides for the movable head and a pair of hydraulic piston-cylinder devices for moving the movable head, the pistons 8 of which are secured to the guide rods and the cylinders 7 of which are secured to the movable heads. Hydraulic presses clamp the workpieces in each head the lower clamping jaw of each press being carried on a frame supporting the cylinder thereof and the upper jaw being carried on the piston which is withdrawn by a separate cylinder 29 or 30. An electric drive 12 effects horizontal movement of the press in the fixed head and an electric drive 13 effects vertical movement of the press in the movable head. Welding transformers 14, 15 housed in the fixed column are connected to their adjacent clamping jaws and by flexible connections 23 to the clamping jaws of the movable head. A slide valve 33 and drive 34 supply liquid to the cylinders 7 to advance the workpieces 6, initially fed into the machine over rollers 35, 36, until they abut when current is supplied. Finally the slide valve allows a greater flow of liquid to upset the workpieces.
