Abstract

A method of electrolysis employing a diaphragmless flowing mercury cathode cell comprises maintaining the cell base at an inclination of between 2 degrees and 85 degrees to the horizontal, maintaining the anodes parallel to the cell base, flowing a mercury film of thickness less than 0.062 inch by gravity over the base of the cell, and flowing an electrolyte through the cell between the anodes and the flowing mercury cathode under a pressure sufficient to keep the mercury covered with electrolyte and to provide a gas separating space at the upper edge of the inclined cell. Preferably the anode-mercury cathode gap is maintained between 0.12 and 0.04 inch and the mercury thickness at its thickest point varies from less than 1/32 inch at an inclination of 15 DEG to up to 3/64 inch. As described the cell is used to electrolyze sodium chloride brine at a temperature of about 160 DEG F. and which is fed in adjacent the lower end of the cell and removed by an overflow and chlorine vent at the upper end. As shown the cell is as described with reference to Fig. 1 in Specification 1,061,443 and includes graphite anodes including gas spaces and channels as in that Specification. Reference is made to the use of the cell for electrolyzing the chlorides and bromides of Li, K, Cs, Rb, Sr, Ba.
