Abstract

1,185,481. Electrolysis of molten electrolytes. E.I. ADAEV, A.V. BLINOV, G.M. KAMARIAN, V.A. NOVOSELOV, V.N. SUCHKOV and L.M. JAKIMENKO. Feb.23, 1967, No. 8706/67. Heading C7B. An electrolytic cell for electrolysis of a molten electrolyte, e.g. of sodium chloride in a fused bath of halide salt electrolytes comprises an anode assembled from a plurality of vertical bars 6 arranged to form a ring in cross-section; a cathode 3 surrounding the anode, the anode and cathode being arranged in a tank 1, lined, e.g. with fireclay brick 2; and the internal cavity of the anode being divided into two spaces by a protective sealing layer 10, e.g. of concrete having a graphite filler, the space above said layer containing electrolyte and the space below it containing the upper part 21 of a cooling system. In the form shown the anode bars 6, which are trapezoidal in cross-section and of graphite, are inserted into a current conducting device 8, and connected thereto by means of screws 7 and lead sealing 13. The cathode 3 is supported by steel plates 4 which pass through the wall of the steel tank 1. A cylindrical screen 18 is positioned between anode and cathode to separate chlorine and sodium produced, the screen being suspended from an annular trough 16, which also supports a diffuser 17 which directs chlorine formed to chamber 22 from which it is withdrawn via a chlorine pipe-line.
