Abstract
A vertical type filter press moving mercury cathode brine cell comprises hollow bipolar electrodes each consisting of a body having a wall of porous material and filled with mercury which percolates through the porous face to form a downwardly moving cathode film, the other wall of the body being anodic and coated with a mercury-impermeable conductive material resistant to chlorine, means being provided for continuously replacing the mercury within the hollow electrodes. The porous wall may be of ceramic, glass, plastic, or sintered metal, e.g. titanium, while the anode wall may be of platinum-plated titanium sheet. The pore size of the porous wall preferably decreases towards the bottom while the wall thickness increases towards the bottom. The electrodes instead of being strictly vertical may be inclined at 1-10 degrees to the vertical.
