Abstract

<FORM:0988610/C6-C7/1> <FORM:0988610/C6-C7/2> An anode, for the electrolysis of NaCl solution in a cell using a horizontal mercury cathode, comprises a graphite anode plate 4, Fig. 2, attached to an electrically conducting metal rod 1 and provided with chambers 5 and pipes 6 through which chlorine generated by the electrolysis can ascend and cause circulation of electrolyte within the cell. The metal rod 1 is attached to the plate 4 by a graphite connector 3 and has a protective covering 2, e.g. of plastics, ceramic, non-corrosive metal or hard rubber. Fig. 3 shows a modification wherein metal conductor rods 16 are connected to a main rod 13 and wherein channels 20 communicate with the longitudinal sides of chlorine chambers 21. Examples of anode-cathode spacings are 5,4 and 3.5 mms.
