Abstract
<PICT:1001112/C6-C7/1> A cell employing a flowing mercury cathode for electrolysing brine solutions including those of NaCl, KCl, LiCl, BaCl2 and Na2SO4 comprises an elongated inclined trough with a cover 19 (Figure shows transverse section), fixed upright members such as jacking screws 17 on which rest transverse channel-shaped bus-bars 11 from which the anode assemblies are suspended and adjusted with regard to their height above the trough bottom 29, e.g. individually by lead-in nuts 27 and 28 and/or collectively by nuts 18 on the jacking screws 17 to maintain the transverse bus-bars 11 at a specified height above the trough. Each anode assembly may comprise a graphite anode 21, a lead-in 16 fixed at its base into a lead button 22 and surrounded by a protective sleeve 24, and a flexible rubber boot 30 between the sleeve and cell cover 19. The transverse bus-bar 11 is made of an electrically conductive metal such as copper, aluminium, silver or alloys containing at least 60% thereof and may be closed by an end-plate 12 silver brazed to one end. Specification 981,747 is referred to.
