Abstract
<PICT:0960085/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0960085/C6-C7/2> An electrolytic cell 1 or 2, for producing alkali metal hydroxide, chlorine and hydrogen from brine, has anodes 4a electrically connected to the cell base, e.g. positioned in a lead matrix 5a, and cathodes 11 electrically connected to the sides of the cell, e.g. extending from cathode structure 10, and comprises at least one anode bus-bar 50a partially embedded in the cell base and at least one cathode bus-bar 52b attached to the side of the cell, each having inter-cell connecting means extending out from the cell and a diminishing cross-section as it extends away from the connecting means so as to carry a uniform current density, wherein inter-cell connection means, e.g. L-shaped conductors 54a slotted in each face, are adapted detachably to connect the anode and cathode inter-cell connecting means and to allow for horizontal and vertical alignment of adjacent cells 1 and 2. As shown, the anodes and cathodes are vertical and two each of anode and cathode bus-bars may be provided, preferably shaped as right-angle triangles with the right-angles of the anode and cathode bus-bars being respectively near the centre of the anode structure and top of the cathode structure.
