Abstract

A plant feeding composition comprises a polyurethane foam extended with a free urea-containing fertilizer, a major proportion of the fertilizer being leachable from the foam by water. The foam in the shape of cubes may be cast on the ground near the plants, dug into the soil or alternatively it may be moulded into the shape of a hollow cone which may be elevated over the plant with the base up.ALSO:A process for the preparation of a urea extended polyurethane foam comprises adding 5 to 80 weight per cent of urea or urea containing mixed fertilizer to at least one of the components to be used in the preparation of the polyurethane foam and thereafter carrying out preparation of the foam. In an example urea is mixed with a prepolymer of a polyether, which is a condensation product of sorbitol with propylene oxide, and toluene diisocyanate and the whole is mixed with another component made by mixing a silicone oil surfactant, triethylene diamine as catalyst, additional polyether and trichloromonofluoromethane as blowing agent to form a foam. The product may be used as a plant feeding composition, the urea being leached from the foam by water in the soil.
