Abstract
A concentrate comprises an organic distillate fuel oil in which are dispersed at least 40% by weight, based on the total weight of the concentrate, of a solid particulate metal-containing compound and, as a dispersant for the particulate compound, an oil-compatible carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid salt. The concentrate, which is a fluid pumpable dispersion at room temperature, is suitable for addition to a fuel oil containing corrosive substances, the metal-containing compound being active as a corrosion inhibitor against such corrosive substances as compounds of vanadium and/or sulphur. The dispersant may be a tall oil acid, a rosin acid (for example abietic acid), a hydrogenated rosin acid, an aromatic or alkyl-aromatic acid (for example, benzoic or methyl benzoic acid), a naphthenic acid, a fatty acid containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms (examples of which are listed in the Specification), or a salt of any of these acids; a soap producing fatty acid is preferred. The concentrate preferably contains from 0.5% to 15% by weight, based on the total weight of the concentrate, of the dispersant, such proportions enabling the concentrate to contain up to 85% by weight of the particulate solid. The particulate solid, which preferably has a particle size of from 2 to 10 microns, may be a compound, preferably inorganic, of magnesium, aluminium, calcium, manganese, thorium, sodium, potassium, barium, zinc, strontium or a rare earth metal. Suitable compounds include the oxides, hydroxides, acetates, carbonates, silicates, oxalates, sulphates, nitrates and halides of these metals; magnesia, magnesium hydroxide or calcined brucite in the form of soap-like flakes is preferred. Suitable distillate fuel oils are diesel fuels, heating oils and petroleum fuels. Examples are given of concentrates in which calcined brucite or dolomite is suspended in a distillate fuel oil containing, as dispersant, a by-product recovered from waste-paper liquors and comprising fatty and rosin acids.ALSO:A concentrate comprises an organic distillate fuel oil in which are dispersed at least 40% by weight, based on the total weight of the concentrate, of a solid particulate metal-containing compound and, as a dispersant for the particulate compound, an oil-compatible carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid salt.
