A carriage for aligning a workpiece with a roll pass comprises a frame (12), arranged below a roller table (16) and guided on rails (14) by rollers (13), and on a lateral track (23) by rollers (22), frame (12) having an arm (17). Arm (17) carries a rack (18) which meshes with a pinion (19), driven by an electric motor via a gear-box; and is supported by a roller (21). A head (23) is slidable in frame (12) and has two pairs of rollers (25) for guiding the workpiece, and a horizontal roller (26) for supporting the forward end of the workpiece. Head (23) is moved vertically by a cylinder (26). In operation, the workpiece arrives on table (16), the carriage is traversed by pinion (19) until rollers (25) are aligned with the workpiece, cylinder (26) is actuated to lift head (23) until the workpiece is supported on roller (26), and the carriage is traversed to align the workpiece with the roll pass.
