Abstract

1,060,454. Stands. M.B.C. (OFFICE SYSTEMS) Ltd. Dec. 23, 1965 [Oct. 16, 1964], No. 42351/64. Heading A4H. A drafting stand comprises a pedestal 10 (Fig. 2, not shown) in which a stem 11 is vertically slidable, and a shaft assembly 12, carried by the stem and provided with supports 13, pivoted on a horizontal axis, for a drawing board, the weight of the stem and the apparatus carried thereby being counterbalanced by elongated laminated springs 14A clipped at their lower ends to a bar 11a on the stem and, at their upper ends, wound on a bobbin 14C freely rotatable on a spindle 14D passing through slots 11B in the stem and secured to the pedestal. The spring force is adjusted to be just in excess of the weight of the drawing board and upward movement of the stem is arrested by guide blocks 15A (Fig. 1, not shown) and a brake shoe 15B operated by a control handle 15C, fitted with a pawl and ratchet mechanism, by means of a Bowden cable. The shaft 12 is rotatable in a casting 12C and has end caps 12A, 12B carrying the supports 13 and locked in adjusted position by friction discs 12D upon operation of a hand lever 12E. A spring-loaded counterbalance mechanism 16 exerts increasing pressure on a rising surface of the casting to assist pivotal movement of the board. In a modification the spring 14A is secured to the pedestal and the bobbin is mounted on the stem.
