Abstract

685,204. Shock absorbers. MONARCH CONTROLLER CO., Ltd., and STEPHENS, R. R. Feb. 27, 1950. [March 14, 1949] No. 6923/49. Class 78 (ii). A shock-absorbing device for a whaler comprises a cable 30 having a pulley 26 or other guide around which a harpoon line 18 is adapted to pass and which is anchored at or adjacent one end of same while the other end thereof is first wound round a first drum portion of a differential drum 36, then passes round a second pulley 52 the block of which is adapted to be connected through a shock absorbing device to the hull, and is finally wound in the reverse direction round and secured by its end to a second drum portion of the differential drum of different diameter from the said first drum portion: Figs. 1 and 3. Harpoon line 18 passes round pulley 26 secured to cable 30 and is wound in upon winch 28, the cable 30 passing over pulley 32 secured to mast 16 and passing down to and being secured to drum 38 of differential drum 36. A second cable (50) is secured to and passed around drum 40, is passed round pulley 52 and is secured to and passed around drum 42. Accordingly, when the whale dives to play out the harpoon line 18, pulley 26 is drawn down and cable 30 is pulled up so as to rotate differential drum 36 and the which draws up pulley 52. This vertical movement of pulley 52 is braked by two springs 64, the springs being pivoted respectively to curved levers 56 and 58 ; lever 56 being pivoted at 70 to frame 72 secured by pivot 78 to the vessel, and the lever 58 being pivoted at 66 to sliding frame 63 which slides within the said frame 72 and is secured to rod 68 fixed by fork 69 to pulley 52 : so that upward movement of said pulley 52 draws the two points 66 and 70 together and causes levers 56 and 58 to roll on each other and the ends thereof to move against the springs 64, which springs thus retard the upward movement of pulley 52 and thus the paying out of the harpoon line.
