Abstract

1,060,264. Travelling wave tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Aug. 13, 1964 [Aug. 26, 1963], No. 33041/64. Addition to 1,054,462. Heading H1D. A permanent magnet periodically focused travelling wave tube has part of its envelope formed by the focusing structure 10 and a slow wave structure assembly 9 fixedly attached to a bore in the focusing structure. The focusing structure comprises adjacent polepieces 31 and spacer members 30 disposed therebetween, each pair of adjacent polepieces defining a hollow recess within which a pair of semi-cylindrical magnets 32, 33 are disposed to form a ring-shaped magnet, the opposing surfaces of the magnets being spaced so as to form a gap, e.g. of between 0À015-0À030 inch. The slow-wave circuit assembly is fixedly attached by being shrunk-fit within the bore. The bore is defined by the array of non-magnetic spacer members and the magnetic pole-pieces, the surface of the bore having a finish of substantially rms 16 micro inch. The travelling wavetube has a plurality of helices each fixedly attached to spaced support rods which extend along the length of the helices, each pair of adjacent helices being separated by a circuit sever.
