1,060,068. Optical gauging apparatus. B. M. LEVIN. Sept. 5, 1963, No.35086/63. Heading G3J. An instrument for measuring surface smoothness comprises a microscope, a measuring carriage with a probe bearing on the surface, and an illuminating device with an optical system which comprises two identical lens-reflector combinations, the two combinations having coincident optic axes and superimposed foci. As shown, a tube 1 having a slot 10 is mounted on two blocks 8 on a surface 9. A measuring carriage 4 is movable within the slot and comprises an illuminating device 5, a microscope 6, and a probe 7 mounted on the carriage and in such a manner that the carriage is supported by the probe and one of a pair of rollers 11. The tube is provided at each end with a lens and prism system 3, 3a. Light from the device 5 passes through a prism 16 in the carriage, then by a prism 17 having a graticule 18 through the systems 3, 3a to a prism 20, and then through the microscope to a grid 23, the images of the graticule 18 and the grid 23 being projected on to a screen 25. The image of the grid 23 may be made to coincide with that of the graticule by a micrometer screw 26 and deviations from flatness of the surface may be determined. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the systems 3, 3a are placed on the surface and the carrier is guided by a band (28).
