Abstract

[Also in Division A4] Treatment for burns or other dermatolergical lesions comprises immersing the patient in a bacteriostatic liquid for a time long enough to permit healing. A silicone fluid is used as this does not cause maceration of the tissues and is water-repellent, the preferred liquid being a dimethylsiloxane. The bath for the treatment comprises a rectangular tank 10 having one outlet 12 at its lowest point and a second outlet 13 controlled by a weir 16. These lead to a circulating pump 20 which passes part of its output through a pipe 22 to inlets 24, to cause turbulence, while the remainder passes through a pipe 23 to a bacterial filter 28, a deodorising tank 28a and a heat exchanger 29, for preventing undesired rise of temperature, and thence to inlets 30 near the upper part of the tank. The filter 28 is formed by depositing a cake of diatomaceous earth on a porous fabric layer through which the liquid passes and this is done by withdrawing part of the liquid through a pipe 41 to make a slurry in a tank 39 and then pumping this through to the filter chamber 28. In the deodoriser the liquid is passed through a perforated receptacle filled with activated charcoal. During treatment the patient is supported on a sling-like frame 31, which may be raised or lowered by hydraulic jacks 32, 33 and the frame may carry subsidiary supporting members mounted on a transverse pivot at the lowest point on the frame so that the shoulders or feet may be raised or lowered. In addition, in a modified form of the tank, see Fig. 2 (not shown) lateral extensions are provided to allow the arms to be extended sideways.
