Abstract

1316430 Therapeutic baths A CAMPBELL 28 Sept 1970 [30 July 1969] 38216/69 Heading A4N [Also in Division A5] A therapeutic bath, for use when treating burns, for example, comprises an open topped bath 1, a surface 2 for supporting a patient in the bath, means for lifting and lowering the support surface, means for controlling the temperature of liquid in the bath, and means for circulating said liquid and for generating upwardly flowing liquid currents therein. A stretcher-type support 2 is carried by a cradle 3a raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram 3 and rotatable about the axis thereof to bring the support outside the bath. Water from a thermostically controlled heating tank 8 passes via a pump 7 proportioning valve 6c to a perforated pipe 6a along the bottom of the bath, to producent vertical currents, and to a perforated pipe 6b at the surface of the water to produce horizontal surface waves towards an overflow shoot 5 leading to tank 8. In an alternative embodiment the support comprises a collapsable frame (10), Figs.4, 5 (not shown), pivoted to a central port of which is a frame (11) for supporting the patients back and head, the frame (11) having a flotation drum (15) to maintain it at an angle to frame (10) such that the patient's head is out of the water. The bath may be provided with means for supplying steam for sterilization and with a disposable waterproof lining.
