Abstract

1,059,659. Printing processes. XEROX CORPORATION. Oct. 6, 1964 [Oct. 7, 1963], No. 40698/64. Heading B6C. A method of duplicating comprises positioning between the faces of two master members 42, 43, Fig. 4, an original sheet 41 bearing images on each of its two sides, said images being of a coloured marking material containing a transferable component, transferring at least a portion of the image material on each side of the original sheet to the face of the master sheet facing it by passing the assembly between heated rollers 45, 46, removing the sheet 41 from between the master sheets and replacing it with a copy sheet, Fig. 6 (not shown) treated with a colour reaction partner for the image material, and passing the new assembly between the heated rollers whereby a two-sided duplicate of the original sheet 41 is obtained. The master may be of a plastics material, metal foil, glass or paper and the original, which is preferably of bond paper, may be imaged with a material containing a chemical such as rubeanic acid by a typewriter, a stylus device, or xerographically. The heat of the rollers 45, 46 causes a portion of the volatile colour reagent to evaporate or sublime between the surfaces of the master sheet and the original. The heat may be supplied by photo-flash lamps, infra-red lamps, hot air blowers, or by electric resistance devices. Examples are given of suitable chemical reaction partners for the image on the original and the treatment of the copy sheets. Printing surfaces.-In the embodiment of Fig. 7 two co-operating rollers 50, 51 carry metal, polytetrafluoroethylene or glass layers 56, 57 and on passage of an original between the rollers an infra-red source 65 causes the transfer of some of the image from each side of the original on to the respective layer. Copy sheets from a feed tray 67 are then run off into a, receiving tray 68. Each roller is provided with a retractible cleaning device 58 comprising a container 60 for a solution 61 which is a solvent for the original image material, a brush 62 and a doctor blade 63. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the rollers are replaced by heated dispensible endless belts of paper or by permanent polyethylene terephthalate belts coated with polytetrafluorethylene. The original and/or the copy sheet may be presented to the heated device as a laminate which is subsequently separable into two sheets.
