Abstract

1,059,298. Stuffing-boxes. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. May 19, 1965, No. 21272/65. Heading F2B. A stuffing-box arrangement for a rod, e.g. a compressor piston-rod 6, comprises an annular chamber 19 which surrounds and is open to the rod and through which cooling liquid is circulated, packing means 22-22e and 22f and 22g on opposite sides of the chamber and a passage 60 or 61 in the packing on the high pressure side of the chamber through which vapour formed from cooling liquid adhering to the surface 18 of the rod is vented. The chamber 19 is formed in a member 13 and water is circulated through the chamber via inlet and outlet passages (20 and 21, Fig. 2) in the member 13. Each of the packing means 22- 22g comprises a pair of segmental rings 25, 26, preferably of polytetrafluoroethylene filled with graphite or glass fibres, housed in a cup 23-23g and urged into contact with the rod by a garter spring 28, 29. The rings 25, 26 are arranged to break joint with each other and prevented from relative rotation by a pin on one engaging a hole in the other. The passage 60 in the cup 23e communicates via aligned passages 62-65 in ring 13 and cups 23, 23e-23g with a passage 66 in retainer 51 connected to atmosphere. The passage 61 in the cup 23d communicates via aligned passages 69-73 in ring 13 and cups 23d-23g with a passage 75 in retainer 51 connected to a source of suction. Vapour formed from cooling water adhering to the rod surface on the high pressure side of the chamber 19 is thus vented either to atmosphere or to a source of suction.
