Abstract

Discrete particles of a polyamide are made by continuously polymerizing a lactam containing at least 6 ring carbon atoms in the presence of an alkali catalyst, a promotor and a liquid carrier having a density less than that of the polymer but more than that of the lactam, said carrier being compatible with the reactive mix and the polyamide and being thermally stable at polymerization temperatures. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, enantholactam, caprylolactam, decanolactam, undecanolactam, dodecanolactam, pentadecanolactam, pentadecanolactam, hexadecanolactam, methyl cyclohexanone isoxime and mixtures thereof. Specified catalysts are the alkali and alkaline earth metals and the hydrides, borohydrides, oxides, hydroxides and organometallic derivatives thereof. Specified promoters are organic isocyanates, ketenes, acid chlorides and N-substituted imides. Specified carriers are dipropyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, diallyl phthalate and certain hydrocarbons.
