Abstract

1349324 Rotational casting of polyamides INVENTA AG FUR FORSCHUNG UND PATENTVERWERTUNG 10 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 6345/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] To produce moulded polyamide articles, a lactam and an anionic activator are fed into a rotatable mould, the activator being contained in film packs from which it is released when the mould is heated and rotated; the temperature at which the activator is released is below the polymerization temperature but is such that the oligomers formed on release can dissolve into the lactam melt. In an example, caprolactam is polymerized at 160-170‹ C. in an aluminium mould using sodium hydride in polyamide 12 film packs as activator and acetyl lactam and polycarbodiimide as accelerators (also in polyamide 12 packs) Laurolactam or a mixture of this with caprolactam may be polymerized using this method. The film pack, which is preferably soluble in the reaction mixture and the resultant polymer, may be polyethylene or polypropylene. The examples relate to the production of a hollow container.
