Abstract

A method of making polylactam articles by polymerizing a lactam in a mould in the presence of an anionic catalyst and a promoter or initiator comprises starting the polymerization before or after charging the reaction mixture in the mould and when the viscosity of the polymerization mixture has increased but before polymerization is completed, deforming the mixture with a die in the mould into the desired shape and then completing the polymerization while maintaining the mixture in said shape. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, oenantholactam, caprylolactam, decanolactam, undecanolactam, dodecanolactam, pentadecanolactam, hexadecanolactam and cyclic hexamethylene adipamide and mixtures thereof. Specified catalysts are the alkali and alkaline earth metals and hydrides, borohydrides, oxides, hydroxides, carbonates and organometallic derivatives thereof, Specified promoters and initiators are organic isocyanates, ketones, acid chlorides, and anhydrides and N-substituted amides.
