Abstract

1276318 Polymerizing lactams FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AG 14 July 1969 [24 July 1968] 35267/69 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] The alkaline polymerization of lactams is effected at 90‹ to 270‹ C. in the presence of an activator which is a lactam-N-carboxylic acid amide which is fully substituted on the amide nitrogen. The scope of the claims is qualified by disclaimers to Specifications 1,204,583, 1,224,207, 1,228,963 and 1,228,964 in respect of specific such activators. Reference is also made to Specifications 969,989 and 900,160; the use of fully N-substituted amides is stated to avoid the splitting off of isocyanates leading to undesirable side reactions. The lactam polymerized and that used to form the activator may be a beta-lactam, pyrrolidone, caprolactam or lauric lactam; the catalyst may be an alkali metal lactam or alcoholate or sodium hydride.
