Abstract

A process for the polymerization of lactams having seven or more ring members with simultaneous moulding of the resultant polymer, wherein the lactams are polymerized in hollow moulds by heating said moulds to the polymerization temperature of the lactams, the reaction taking place in the presence of alkaline catalysts comprises melting the lactam at temperatures below polymerization temperature and then introducing the melt together with the alkaline catalyst into the hollow mould by means of conveying equipment. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, oenantholactam, caprylolactam and laurolactam. Specified catalysts are the alkali metals and hydroxides, carbonates, alcoholates and lactamates thereof. Specified activators are carboxylic acid halides and esters, lactones, inorganic acid halides and esters, substituted ureas, urethanes and guanidines, sulphonic acid halides and esters, phosphoric acid halides and esters, isocyanates, carbodiimides and ketones. The example describes the polymerization of e -caprolactam in an injection cylinder in the presence of potassium and 1 : 6-bis-(caprolactam-N-carbamido)-hexane.
