Abstract
1348726 Injection moulding polyamides BAYER AG 28 Sept 1971 [14 Oct 1970] 45038/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Polymerizable lactam mixtures which are storage stable are produced by using a weakly basic catalyst precursor which is converted by decarboxylation, into a strongly basic catalyst on heating. A mixture containing a lactam having at least 5 ring members, a catalyst precursor and an activator is polymerized at a pressure of at least 50 atms. in the barrel of a screw or piston injection apparatus, injected into the mould at a pressure of at least 300 atms., and subsequently solidified in the mould under a follow up pressure of at least 100 atms.; the catalyst precursor is an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal salt of a carboxylic acid having one of the general Formulae I, II, III where R and R<SP>1</SP>, which can be the same or different, each represents an alkyl radical having 1-10 carbon atoms, an aryl radical having 6- 10 carbon atoms, or hydrogen, or together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a cycloaliphatic ring having 6-10 carbon atoms, X represents an electron attracting group, R<SP>11</SP> represents a linear or branched alkyl radical having 1-16 carbon atoms or a mononuclear or polynuclear aryl radical having 6-18 carbon atoms, and R<SP>111</SP> represents a divalent organic radical. The lactam used may be pyrrolidone, caprolactam, caprylic lactam or lauric lactam. Polymerization may be completed before injection into the mould or may continue during the moulding process.
