Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:1058404/C2/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl radical and R2 represents a halogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl radical) are prepared by cyclizing a compound of the formula <FORM:1058404/C2/2> by heating with polyphosphoric acid. The starting materials in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom may be prepared by condensing 2-chloronicotinic acid with a compound of the formula <FORM:1058404/C2/3> and the starting materials in which R1 represents a C1- 4 alkyl radical may be prepared by hydrolysing a compound of the formula <FORM:1058404/C2/4> (wherein R11 represents a C1- 4 alkyl radical). The latter compounds may be prepared by condensing a compound of the formula <FORM:1058404/C2/5> (wherein Hal represents a halogen atom) with a compound of the formula <FORM:1058404/C2/6> (wherein Alk represents an alkali metal atom) at an elevated temperature.
