Abstract

1,057,988. Safety harness. BRITAX (LONDON) Ltd. Sept. 24, 1965 [June 24, 1964], No. 26099/64. Heading A3V. [Also in Division E2] A releasable anchorage for a safety harness comprises a support member adapted to be rigidly connected to the floor of a vehicle at a point at the side of the wearer's seat distant from the side of the vehicle an arm 5 mounted on the support member and movable between the first position in which it is adapted to hold the harness in its operative position and a second inoperative position in which it is adapted to release the harness and releasable locking means 10 to hold the arm in the first position. In the construction shown the support member comprises a base portion 1 from which extends two upstanding sides 2 connected together by a bridge portion 3. A pin 4 passes through both sides 2 to form a pivot for two said arms 5. The arms are biased apart on the pin 4 by means of a spring and in use when the base portion 1 is fixed to the vehicle floor the arms 5 extend in a rearward direction each to receive part of a sling 7 of a respective safety harness. The anchorage is intended for use with safety harnesses each comprising an inertia type storage reel permanently fixed to the vehicle the harness issuing from the storage reel, running freely through a connection to a second permanent fixing and returning to the inertia reel or a fixing adjacent thereto so that the sling is formed; the two permanent fixings are on or near the side of the vehicle and one portion of the sling can be pulled across the body of a wearer to form both lap and diagonal straps when engaged by one of the arms 5; the second arm 5 similarly engages the sling of a second harness. Each side wall of the support member is provided with an abutment 9, each abutment being engaged by one end of a respective arm 5 to hold the arm in the operative position. The arms are held on to the abutments by the means 10 which, as shown, is a pin turnable by means of a handle 11 and mounted in the bridge portion 3. The lower portion of the pin is of oval or rectangular cross-section so that in one position it holds the arms on the abutments and in a position 90 degrees rotated from such position it allows each arm to be moved inwardly towards the other arm to free it from the abutment so that the arm can be moved through approximately 90 degrees to the inoperative position. The handle and pin are biased downwardly by a spring 14 and a flange 13 is provided on the pin between the handle 11 and the bridge portion 3 the flange 13 having ridges thereon which are held in grooves in the portion 3, by the spring 14, when the pin is in its operative position.
