Abstract

993,396. Safety harness. VOLVO A.B. March 25, 1964 [March 30, 1963], No. 12586/64. Heading A3V. A safety belt for vehicles comprises a hip belt and a breast belt forming a continuous loop detachably connected to one of three load bearing points and a lockable belt reel on the belt. The belt is connected by extensions 3 and 4 to a reel 13 and passes through freely pivoting eyes 11, 12 at connecting points 5 and 7 on the floor and at the top of a door panel to lie against the panel or be enclosed when not in use. When in use, the locking detent of the reel is withdrawn and the belt is pulled out and a clasp 10 on the belt is engaged with an anchoring mounting 9 on the vehicle floor or with a rigid or flexible connection on the floor. The detent is reengaged, the belt providing a breast belt 1 and a hip belt 2. Various relative positions of the fixing points and reel are described. The reel may be situated below the point 7 or at the upper point 5. The reel and the clasp may be combined. The ends of the belt may be attached to a door panel. The belts may be attached to a rear seat as shown in Fig. 9 or to the sides of the vehicle with the mounting points 9 centrally situated.
